Elm Evaluation Project
A Cooperative Effort Between the University of Minnesota and the
Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board
In the fall of 1999, the Department of Horticultural Science at the University of Minnesota and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) developed an elm evaluation project housed on St. Paul campus. This extensive project, located in the Teaching Research and Extension (TRE) Nursery, intends to be an ongoing system of evaluation that will be of value to professionals in both the horticultural and arboricultural fields. University students in numerous programs have the opportunity to acquire valuable skills in planting, harvest, pruning, training and fertilizer/pesticide application while working on this project. Many of these procedures are unique to elms as they offer challenges to both growers and tree care professionals.
Data on the elm trees is collected annually and includes several growth measurements, insect problems, and so on. Annual photos of each variety are also published to give an idea of foliage, form, and habit in a nursery setting.
We are always looking to evaluate new and potentially disease resistant American elms. If you have a disease resistant selection that is ready for evaluation please contact the webmaster at gibli002@umn.edu.
